The museum was founded by Antonios Benaki and originally comprised his collection only which as been augmented by other donors and now comprises over 45,000 pieces, 45,000 books and 650 archived collections of historical documents as well as the richest photographical archive in Greece. It mostly displays only its Greek collection. Its a hodge podge of various epochs and eras but quite big.
