During the Ottoman period this area was known as the "Wheat Bazaar" (above). Here just across the street is the Roman Agora entrance with the Tower of Winds just behind.

And below as we continue on past, still in the Plaka but heading gradually up towards Anafiotikia clinging to the slopes of the Acropolis.

athens greece roman agora As this drawing below shows and to round out your picture of the area, for many years it looked nothing like it does today. Pictured is a view of the one of the no longer standing City Gates of ancient Athens: The Gate of Athinas Archegetis as drawn in 1751 by Stuart and Revett.

 

The city of Athens was sacked by the Herulians in 267 AD and the complex was not rebuilt.The sack necessitated a much reduced city and new defensive walls were constructed within the older circuit.
