Byzantine Church of the Pantanassa

Byzantine Church Athens Greece Pantanassa, Mikro Monastiraki

In Monastiraki Square. The architecture of the church continues in the tradition of Byzantine basilicas. It is a long narrow building divided internally into three aisles by two rows of columns. The church was the katholikon (central place of worship) of a convent, which housed a textile weaving center that supplied the adjascent bazaar with cloth. Archaeological excavationsin 1885 and the construction for the electric railway 10 years later, left the Pantanassa convent berift of its additional buildings and the katholikon was demoted to an ordinary church named Monastiraki (i.e. Little Monastery).
